  • 1 tsp granulated sugar (for sprinkling on top)
  • 1/2 cup cold butter (or vegan butter)
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 1/2 cup milk (any type)
  • 1 tsp milk (for top)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar (for icing, optional)
  • 2 tbsp melted butter (for icing, or vegan butter)
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup (for icing)
  • 1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract (for icing)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, baking powder, spices, salt, and sugar.
  3. Cut in cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Stir in milk and molasses until just combined.
  5. Form dough into a circle on a cookie sheet about 3/4 inch thick.
  6. Brush with milk and sprinkle sugar on top.
  7. Cut into wedges and bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
  8. Optional: Drizzle with icing made from powdered sugar, melted butter, maple syrup, and vanilla.
