Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup warm whole milk
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1/4 cup softened unsalted butter
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tbsp red food coloring (gel or liquid)
  • 1/2 cup softened unsalted butter (for filling)
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar (for filling)
  • 2 tbsp ground cinnamon (for filling)
  • 1/2 tsp salt (for filling)
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened (for frosting)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened (for frosting)
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar (for frosting)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • Pinch of salt (for frosting)

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine warm milk and water. Sprinkle yeast on top and let it sit for about 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add flour, sugar, salt, cocoa powder, eggs, red food coloring, and vanilla extract. Mix until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5–7 minutes until smooth. Place in a greased bowl and let rise covered for 30 minutes.
  4. Prepare the filling by mixing softened butter with brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt until well combined.
  5. Roll out the dough into a rectangle on a floured surface. Spread the filling evenly over it.
  6. Roll up tightly from one edge into a log and slice into even pieces (about 12 rolls). Place cut-side up in a greased baking dish.
  7. Cover with a towel and let rise again for about 20 minutes while preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  8. Bake for approximately 25 minutes until golden brown.
  9. While baking, whip cream cheese with butter until creamy; add powdered sugar gradually along with vanilla extract and salt until smooth.
  10. Frost rolls once cooled slightly before serving.
